Workshop details

  • Workshop participants will share their experiences with and processes for teaching mountains, not researching them. Pedagogy is our focus, so practical teaching and curriculum development tips will be much appreciated.

  • Workshop topics include, but are not limited to:

~  academic programs in mountain studies (undergraduate, graduate;

 majors, minors, certificates)

~  centers for mountain studies and their connections with pedagogy both

on and off campuses

~  individual teachers' pedagogical practice (innovative syllabi; teaching

techniques; successes & challenges in the classroom)

~  teaching mountains at an institution outside a mountain region

~  teaching mountains at an institution that does not have a robust

mountain studies curriculum or engagement

~  teaching mountain humanities

~  teaching mountain sciences

~  incorporating mountain humanities into mountain science teaching and

vice versa

~  award-winning mountain studies teachers and what they do best

~  the Appalachian Regional Commission's Appalachian Teaching Project

(USA)

~  teaching writing mountains -- creative writing teachers and their

pedagogical practices

  • Workshop session categories:

~  individual presentation (20 minutes)

~  group presentation with three or more presenters (1.25 hours)

  • There is no Zoom option for either the workshop or the conference.

  • Workshop participants are responsible for their own travel costs.

  • The Teaching Mountains workshop has no affiliation with the International Connections Committee of the Appalachian Studies Association (which I chair) or Appalachian State University (where I am a faculty member). I am organizing this workshop as an individual scholar, just like any scholar organizing a panel discussion or roundtable at any conference.

  • Workshop participants are encouraged to attend the Mountain the Teacher -- Mountain Taught conference (8-10 Sept 2022) immediately following the workshop.

  • If a workshop participant stays for the conference and would like to contribute to the Mountain the Teacher -- Mountain Taught conference, please contact me, not the conference organizers. The conference call for papers has long been closed. However, workshop participants may appear on the conference program as  presenters in a conference session titled Findings from the Teaching Mountains Workshop. That conference participation arrangement is made through me, not the conference organizers.
